Brad Deal 28 of Braboo was charged with Battery, disorderly Conduct and Substantial Battery-Intend Bodily Harm for the beating at the Historic Apts(that the Portage Daily Register took a week to get around to report on, and only did so AFTER people from this site and others had to inquire them personally and MAKE them cover it). 8-21-09 and 9-1-09 are his next court apearance dates.
Also charged was Jason Harried 23 of Portage, with the following. Substantial Battery-Intend Bodily Harm, Disorderly Conduct. Strangulation and Suffocation, False Imprisonment, Resisting or Obstructing an Officer and battery. I bet his parents are just so propud of him now, aren't you glad to have this guy as a resident of your city? Such a lovely angel.
Both men are currently in the Columbia County Jail and need cash bonds to be released. Let's hope they can't get the cash up because after speaking with several tenants of the Historic apts. and people in the downtown area, nobody is unhappy that they're sitting in the jail except their friends. So sit they are gettinmg their three hots and a cot and the impression is, most people hope they stay there where they belong.
Wed. July 1st at approximately 5:00 PM Portage Police were called to the Historic(Da Ram) at 207 West Cook Street for a fight. Two men who are known to people in the building as 'losers' because they just bring trouble and problems every time they go there, were arrested for beating on someone in the building. They were promptly taken to Columbia County Jail. The Portage Daily Register has YET to do any kind of story on this. Inquiries made via email to an editor there have gotten no answers back on why they won't cover a story like this.
The Columbia County Board won't authorize money for more Jail Staff at Columbia County Jail. It's a well known fact that they go thru periods of overcrowding there but, it's also a known fact that they have a whole floor both in the 'secure' side as well as the 'Huber" side that isn't being used to ease over crowding when it occurs and just have inmates sleeping on mattress on the floor, violating state regulations. Someone Should ask Sheriff Richards why that floor remains vacant and not used. Try to get someone from the Daily Register to do that and any story involving issues like that at the jail, they duck and dodge for reasons never explained.
July 7th at approximately 1:00 a.m. a woman Barefoot was seen leaving Matt's Tap (picture of their sign above at top of page). She was screaming and crying to herself. he she was seen staggering across Cook street, walked down Wisconsin Street where she crossed the street and smacked herself against a bicycle rack. She slid to the ground yeling and crying andscreaming some more, then she reached into her purse to get her shoes on, one pants leg up, one down she staggered back across Wisconsin street and proceeded to kick and beat on the dors of the Portage Theatre. By the time Portage Police came the woman had staggered down Wisconsin street to Conant Street, staggered and yelled her way back to Cook Street only to land back, where? in Matt's Tap, where she stayed until Bar time and had to be pulled acriss Cook Street because she was just as Obnoxiously rude and staggering drunk as she was the first time she came down Wisconsin Street. Her friends who were none the better all walked down Wiscosnins street and had to keep the woman from constantly staggering out in the middle of Wisconsin Street. How the Portage Police or the Columbia County Sheriff's patrol missed this, is quite the mystery.
July 7th at approximately 1:30 a.m. People leaving where? Matt's Tap (Very popular place can't you tell?) and walking up Cook Street towards Dewitt when two men started a shouting match with each other. The argument spent out into the middle of Cook Street from the front of Service Drugs and then back onto the sidewalk. Portage Police were called but by the time they arrived the group had made it to the Cottonwood, where they had more drinks and after 2:00 a.m. Got into it by Conant and Dewitt as Portage Police and an ambulance were called to the scene. It all seems to start from Matt's Tap. Police were also called to a Bar on Wisconsin street alittle earlier. Tall Paul's seems to be another problematic place for dysfunctional behavior.
This is just on a Monday Night, wait until you read what happens on a weekend in this area, you'll wonder why it's so tolerated and why the Portage Daily Register doesn't make mentions about this more than they do, which is rare.
